For what many of you may or may not know, the new Cartoon Network show MAD, based on the magazine which was also the base for our wonderful show is (that's right, with the 'u' bitches!) September 6th. So with this, and the fact that we are celebrating the 8th year on the internet with the name that was always right, I figure what better day to start talking about the related family member forthcoming.
Here's the place to start your MAD on. Talk about the show, the premier, and everything related to the little guy. 2 letters off from MADtv, but 6 degrees of separation.
Let's welcome the MADness! For all the non-US viewers like myself who can't see the preview from the site, don't worry, it's dun been. I don't see it as that way.
They may have the same name but they are of entirely different style. MAD will come back soon. Fox this year is just running reruns of shows from the week at 11:00, and by what they learned from the Conan fiasco once you give the affiliates time, they will never give it back. In fact, they are probably already thinking about bringing in back since compared to everything else they have or will put on it, it is the only thing that was successful. While all of that is true, if FOX were really thinking that way, they would have kept the show on hiatus and not fully canceled it. They had to have known there was a chance that Wanda Sykes wasn't going to be a huge hit, so that when they inevitably canceled it, they'd still have MADtv on the backburner ready to air.
But I imagine FOX would prefer to air reruns in that timeslot anyway. It wouldn't cost them the amount of money it would to make a new show entirely, plus they can use it to burn off episodes of canceled shows, which would keep the fans of those shows happy without having to keep them on the primetime lineup. The only problem I see with this is that the affiliates would probably have a problem with this since they could get more money by airing their own reruns, especially since they don't get any money from Weekend Marketplace, plus they probably won't want new episodes of shows nobody watched in the first place. And if the failure of NBC last year taught us anything, it's that the affiliates are the ones REALLY running things. Torrent commodores discography. Well I think things have changed since MADtv's cancellation. Fox and other networks are now realizing that the affiliates have power. Had the Jay/Conan thing happened 2 years ago, things could have been different.
This is why I think this reruns thing won't work, because by January, the affiliates will probably be going to Fox and saying 'Look, either run something new in there or were taking it back by force'. They can do this, as affiliates have often blocked shows that they deem are offensive or hurtful to there news programs, like what Boston wanted to do with Jay's show before it began. Since MADtv proved that it worked and was the only successful show in that spot, maybe they will realize that MADtv, or some other sketch comedy show is the only thing that will work in that spot.
I believe that Fox can't stay out of the sketch comedy game for long. Like drama at 10:00, sketch comedy is the only thing that really works on late night Saturdays. Since MADtv is an already established name, I really don't see why they wouldn't want to bring it back, especially due to the affiliate thing.
So did anybody catch it? I'm not quite sure what to make of it. It's basically just Robot Chicken for a younger audience, but since MADtv was long seen as just SNL for a younger audience, that may not be a bad thing. It had its funny parts, but it's so fast paced (even more so than Robot Chicken) that some of the jokes don't gave time to develop. I don't know. Like I said, Cartoon Network and DC don't quite get along, so I can't imagine this show being on very long, but since a lot of MADtv cast members do voice work now, I think we can expect to see at the very least, Phil LaMarr doing some voices on the show.
