Colorfly C4 Pro Firmware Update
• Hello, A lot of C4 lovers ask me about what format C4 support. Now all formats and their specifications are listed below.
First off I have to say for those used to the seamless way of iTunes and iPods this will come as something of a shock. You basically plug via USB the machine in to you MAC or PC and treat as an external drive. If you have an SD card plugged in to the Colorfly then that will show as a separate disc. You then copy folders for each album containing your WAV or FLAC files to the Colorfly or SD card. No USB3 or Thunderbolt support so it is slow to copy across. Say 4 to 5 minutes for each album.
However when you plug your Grado PS1000 or Senn 800 and listen to your music you will find yourself, as I did, with a goofy grin on your face and muttering the words 'awesome'. Explaining your delight to your friends and family will be wasted as they will not understand. Those that know, know.
If you like lossless files and believe iPods need external amps and dacs and Westone 4c then you will want one. I've used an iPod for several years but was in a grump with iTunes metadata.
I had used iTunes match and was getting fed up with the way covers kept changing and tracks were changing order. I'm familiar with databases and was basically frustrated in not having the database model so I could get everything perfect.

I came up with an alternative plan of 'perfect' sound reproduction instead! I bought this player on the grounds of good reviews on the web. I also had collected some FLAC files and other downloads on the computer and was wondering whether Linn/Apple were right that downloading was 'the future' and whether I was going to buy into it. I recently bought a Yamaha BluRay player that also played SACDs and was struck by the brilliance of the definition and soundstage (especially of piano music. Sublime Schubert recordings!) Executive summary: Go for SACDs! On the positive side this player sounds excellent on headphones The wood is nice On the negative side.
They don't give you a UK power adaptor for a £500 music player! The player needs songs converted to the right format to play 24 bit FLACS at 192 kHz (extra software required on a MAC) The player displays the tracks in the order they are copied to it (3 Apple hidden files being first on the list) You get thumps through the headphones at power up and down You get whooshes when certain tracks finish They can't even proof read the display!
It says TF (which is MicroSD) or INTERAL (internal in a Chinese accent) The software update to cure the whoosh locked it up. But it did reset okay The MicroSD card gets stuck and doesn't pop out properly The 3.5 mm headphone jack is slightly stubborn - stopping slightly short in mono - till you push harder The sound playing through the HiFi is slightly flat, though I suspect this is because I have a valve amplifier.
The higher impedance 1/4' jack is better for this and I think a low capacitance cable too The RCA jacks for digital in and out aren't central in the holes The player is slightly large for portable use, but not impossible In conclusion, this is a mobile music player with excellent sound quality. For quality of anything else, including build, I think Apple are still hard to beat I am not unhappy that I bought this, but I wouldn't bother again. I would stick with iTunes and pod for mobile use (train, walk etc) where some of the benefit of the sound quality is lost, and buy a good SACD player for home use Where this would be excellent would be for a two home person; studio flat in the city and house in the country.
